PHYLLOSTACHYS Bambusoides

Common Name: Madake

Characteristics:  Also known as the "Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo." The canes are an attractice dark greeen color with longer leaves. The canes are approaching 5 inches in diameter here at our farm. Has a white powdery band beneath each node at sheath-fall. On our farm we have a 300 foot long Madake screen on the road frontage that creates a beautifully tall green backdrop.

Key Features:

  • Can withstand very dry and cold environments.
  • Culms get lighter in color as they age.
  • Slow Spreading.
  • Madake is a must have for bamboo lovers, the sheer size is very impressionable in height and diamter.
  • Prefers direct sun and will need plenty of water with good drainage for the first year of growth. 
  • During shooting season, these new culms can grow over a foot a day! They emerge from the ground in April and can reach 45 feet by June!

PHYLLOSTACHYS AUREOSULCATA

Common Name: Yellow Groove

Characteristics: This exotic bamboo can be identified by two different features: about 10% of the culms at the base possess a zig-zag shape and the internode furrows are marked with a yellow stripe. When the culms are younger they will have a light sandpaper feel. They have longer branches with small leaves.

Key Features:

  • The zizag is quite striking, specially since it regains a very upright stature overall.
  • Very attractive bamboo as a specimen in ground or in a large pot.
  • Great to mix in with other varieties, for added interest.
  • Makes a great screen candidate.
  • Very cold hardy and thrives in heat.

PHYLLOSTACHYS RUBROMARGINATA

Common Name: Rubro

Characteristics: Also known as the 'Red Shoot or Red Sheath' bamboo. An excellent candidate for privacy screens. The canes are very strong with thick walls. Rubro is quick to establish and is regarded as one of the most prolific shooters, in terms of new growth in the spring.

Rubromarginata’s height and density makes it an excellent windbreaker and privacy screen!

Key Features:

  • Very dark green year round.
  • Noted for its good quality wood.
  • Very sweet edible shoots, you can break off a shoot and eat it raw, tastes like a sweet pea.
  • It tolerates cold and dry winds.
  • Rubro is an excellent bamboo for a tall compact screen
  • Very fast grower. At our farm they are at 30 feet tall and 1.5" in diameter.
