PHYLLOSTACHYS AUREOSULCATA 'Alata'

Common Name: Alata

Characteristics: This varietal is closely related to 'Yellow Groove' but this is an all green form. This also has a zig-zag form along the base in about 10% of the culms. The zig-zags add a visually striking appearance. Crooked stem is very upright bamboo with little to no tendency to lean. This bamboo grows very dense and a great candidate for privacy.

Key Features:

  • The zig-zag is quite striking, specially since it regains a very upright stature overall.
  • Very attractive bamboo as a specimen in ground or in a large pot.
  • Great to mix in with other varieties, for added interest.
  • Makes a great screen candidate.
  • Cold & heat hardy, can be planted almost anywhere

PHYLLOSTACHYS AUREA

Common Name: Golden Bamboo

Characteristics: Several short internodes at the base of some of its culms. Golden bamboo came from the Japanese and Chinese immigrants. 

They would put bamboo in suitcases and crates as something they could remember of their old home when they came to live in America. Golden bamboo became the most popular here in California because it was among the hardiest bamboo in Asia and survived the long travel from Asia to America. The most commonly cultivated bamboo in the United States.

  • Ornamental Value, short base internodes, culms prized for crafts because of this feature
  • Great in pots. Takes neglect very well, very hardy bamboo.
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Good Screen candidate

Phyllostachys Aureosulcata "Spectabilis"

Common Name: Spectabilis

Characteristics: Spectabilis is a very hardy bamboo that has beautiful coloration with a golden cane carrying a green stripe embedded into the vertical groove. Grows very vigorous and can quickly provide a dense hedge. Some of the canes will have a zig-zag bend like the letter ā€˜Zā€ along the lower end of the cane. Heavy foliage with small leaves.

  • High Ornamental value for coloration and cane zig-zag
  • Very Cold Hardy
  • Cane diameter can reach 1 inch
